Do you guys know about the Malaysian singer SonaOne? I came across his 2018 track “Obvious” today, and it was pretty shocking in a good way; this song sounds more American than many American songs! Impressed by this track, I looked up his other tracks out of curiosity: He really rocks! So, today, let me talk about this trendy artist, SonaOne! According to Wikipedia, SonaOne grew up traveling around the world because of his parents’ careers. Since coming back to Malaysia at the age of 10, he started making music and painting graffiti. He had initially popularized his name as a graffiti artist until he was discovered by the rapper Joe Flizzowhim, who nurtured him into a musician. In 2010, Joe Flizzow officially got Sonaone signed to his music label Kartel Records, and Sonaone released his first mixtape “Illegal Downloads Vol.1.” Afterwards, in 2013, SonaOne unveiled his first studio album “Grow Up Sucks!" The lead single “No More” particularly gained him huge recognition from the public and even won the Best Song category in the 21st Anugerah Industri Muzik. (This song is great and reminiscent of the old Bruno Mars songs.) Since then, he has released many other hits, including “Obvious,” and became one of the most famous rappers in the country. In 2019, he even joined Def Jam Malaysia as an artist. What I like the most about this artist is definitely his trendy music, which sounds more American than American pop music as I mentioned earlier 😂. Simply speaking, listening to his music is like getting Americanized chocolate from a box of chocolates made in Malaysia; it’s unexpected but still great! 😄 On top of that, he makes his own music, so he’s really kick-ass! Plus, he rocks in many different genres; his latest single “Kuey Teow” is a laid-back, ratchet-based club tune that is quite different from his past upbeat hits like “Obvious,” and “No More.”  So, this was my introduction to SonaOne! If you haven’t checked out his music yet, please do! He's awesome!
