A Straße is usually paved, while a dirt road, track, or trail (Feldweg, Weg oder Wanderweg) is unpaved. A Gasse is smaller, but usually also paved. Distinguished from Straße are motorways and expressways (Autobahn und Schnellstraße), which are simply major roads.
