When to use each version of 'My'

I'm just starting to learn Ukrainian, and I'm having trouble with some of the conjugation of words.

Here's an example. I undstand each of these words mean 'My' and are used in different contexts, what I don't yet understand is when to use which version:

мій

моє

мої

моя

Can someone explain?

Thank you!

Hello! These pronouns are used to say that something belongs to you.

For example, imagine that you are holding a book. You want to say that the book belongs to you, "It's my book". You should think of the gender of the word "book" - книга. It ends in "а", so it's feminine. It means that you need the feminine version of "my" - "моя". We land with "Це моя книга (fem.)".

Now imagine that you are with your friend. You want to say, "It's my friend". "Friend" (друг) ends in a consonant, so it's masculine and you need a masculine version of "my" which is "мій". In the end you have: Це мій друг (masc.).

Imagine that you are holding an apple and don't want to share it ;) You say, "It's my apple". The word "apple" (яблуко) ends in "o", so it's neuter and you need the neuter version of "my" - "моє". You say: Це моє яблуко (neut.).

The good news is that when you have some objects, when you have something in plural, you don't need to think about the gender of these words. You always use "мої" for the plural form of the words of any gender. Це мої книги (fem.Pl.). Це мої друзі (masc.Pl.). Це мої яблука (neut.Pl.).

твій друг (your friend), твоя книга (your book), твоє яблуко (your apple), твої друзі (your friends)
