The difference is that "to hear" is passive and "to listen" is active. To listen is to pay attention and concentrate on what the other person is saying, but to hear simply means that your ears register the sound. For example, if a teacher is talking to you and you are daydreaming, you hear the sound of them talking but you do not know what they said because you were distracted and were not listening. Hear = oír; listen = escuchar.

I am hearing something boring. (INCORRECT)

Instead, you have to use something like the following :

I am listening to something boring. (CORRECT)
