How many hours a week is the best amount for tutoring?
I love italki. I have made so much progress with my korean tutor. I am trying out other tutors as well. Because of schedule differences I always want one to be available on a day I want to study. Thing is, I could possibly book a one hour lesson everyday, my schedule and budget (depending on the tutor I choose) allow for it while still giving me time to review before the next lesson. So basically , i'm wondering what the best balance is between self study and meeting with a tutor? If it helps i'm also a complete beginner so there isn't much I can do on my own right now. Appreciate your thoughts, thanks!

Ideally you'd be doing 3 hours a week with a tutor + 2 hours of self study & lesson review for each lesson. If you really do have nothing but free time then daily lessons with review (in your case practicing reading korean out loud and reviewing vocab) would get a lot of work done fast. If you're dedicated enough you could be upper intermediate or even advanced within a year, provided that you put in the after-class hours.

Hi Birdy,
I’m a bit confused by the idea that “I’m a complete beginner so there isn’t much I can do on my own right now”. Could you look up the basic vocabulary of your daily life and work on mastering it? Could you work on describing your daily routine in Korean (an exercise to help with thinking in the new language)?

I think that when the options are self-study and one-to-one tutoring, basic vocabulary building is best handled in self-study. Then use it in the lessons to try and communicate.

If you can study on your own and with a tutor everyday, I’d say that is optimal! Apart from moving to Korea and having full immersion it’s the next best thing.
