The periphrasis salir+gerundio goes only with some verbs (ganar, perder) and it is used to express the final result of an event, action, etc.
For example:
Salí perdiendo dinero con la venta de mi casa. ( I ended up losing money with the house sale)
Al final salimos ganando con nuestro negocio. (Finally we made out really well with our business)
It is also used with the verb correr: Salir corriendo with the meaning: run away / leave in a hurry.
Cuando escuchamos el ruido, salimos corriendo. (when we heard the noise, we run away)
Salir volando and salir pitando have a similar meaning but with more emphasis on the speed and are more colloquial.
María ha salido pitando porque llega tarde al trabajo. (Maria has just rushed off to work because she is late)
I hope it helps, let me know if you need help or more examples .

No es fácil traducir a otro idioma, pero lo único que se me ocurre es ( wind up + gerund ).
I wind up earning profit when I invest in businesses / Salgo ganando capital cuando invierto en los negocios. Es algo que se ocurre espontáneamente o de repente.
