Don't stress out about the alphabet. It is actually a lot of fun to learn once you get the hang of it. I actually started learning Russian recently and the alphabet was the very first thing I learned. I am so glad that I started with it! You need to take it step by step and not overwhelm yourself! At first I tried to watch YouTube videos of the ABC's and this was not at all effective for me. I couldn't memorize the alphabet that way and it was way too boring. I found a free app on the iPhone (Read Russian in 3 hours), and it actually worked extremely well for me. I even taught my 5 and 7-year-old nephews and they thought it was fun and easy to learn. In the app, they teach you by isolating each letter step by step (and not by A, B, C) and had examples on signs in Russia using real images. They also used cognates so you could see just how many Russian words they borrow from other languages, like English! They also make you sound out Russian words. All the lessons build off each other and the app is completely free. I highly recommend it! I found this to be a much more effective way to learn the alphabet and now I honestly have no trouble with it. I couldn't imagine learning Russian without knowing it.
Once you know the alphabet, writing it is another story altogether, however. It seems Russians do not print like we do in English. They prefer cursive and the cursive letters look different from their printed forms (д appears like g somewhat, for example). But if you are typing on the computer you can get a silicone Russian keyboard which goes over the English one and then you will know where all the letters are. That's what I did and now I need to practice learning where they are on the keyboard.
Good Luck and don't give up! It's fun and once you get the hang of it, it's not very difficult at all.

You’re right about starting with the alphabet, it’s inevitable. Skipping learning Cyrillic is like skipping learning notes and trying to go straight to playing the piano. Good news is, it won’t take you long. The playlist I shared with you is the same approach that I take with my students. On average, it takes about a week or two to get used to it. But you have to do it. You have to sit down and repeat the letters. Then try to do the same on your own. In Russian, there’s a saying, “a wolf is not as scary as it’s pictured”. If you have any particular difficulties, share them.

If you speak English on a decent level, you can try learning over here (also English subs and auto-translation are available to languages apart from English). I hope it helps!

I feel like the alphabet shouldn't always come first when learning a new language. What motivates me is interaction. And it's totally possible to communicate without knowing the alphabet and rules. My grandma doesn't know how to read (because of the war), she doesn't know anything about cases and conjugations, but she speaks perfect Russian. Watching movies, videos, listening to songs, noticing how a language works - those are some great ways to learn a language. And of course there's no substitute for speaking and simply communicating - it's inspiring, motivating, enjoyable and really effective. And you don't have to be fluent to hold a very basic conversation. Good luck :) Good things take time :)
