How to write arabic in latin script
Hello world!
I'd like to share with you what I've just learned today regarding the usage of the latin alphabet in order to write arabic.
There are some letters, which are obvious, however some sounds are not to be found in the english sound-spectrum. In this case, we can use numbers to help us represent the letters, which are unique to arabic.
Most of them are chosen by their visual resemblance to the given arabic letter:
ح = 7
ع = 3
ط = 6
خ =5
The number 5 is used, because the arabic word for five خمسة starts with the letter خ
ص= 9
Here, perhaps the optical resemblance is not evident at the first glance, however if you tilt the 9 by 90°, you should be able to see it.
غ = gh
ج =g
ث = th
ذ = dh
ض = dd
zh = ظ
q = ق
How are YOU using the latin script to write arabic?
Also my question for students of arabic: how do YOU feel about articles teaching the arabic language without including the arabic script? For me personally, I always skip them, because I find it difficult to know the correct pronunciation, whereas when it is written in arabic script, the pronunciation is much clearer.
I'll be happy to read your opinions!

Hello Tomas,
I think there is a difference between the alphanumeric transcription of Arabic (which is the first one you mentioned) and a scientific transcription. Whether the first one is related to informal contexts such as forums, social media or sms and so it can be rather vague, the second one has to be precise. The problem with this kind of transcription
غ = gh
ج =g
ث = th
ذ = dh
ض = dd
zh = ظ
q = ق
is that you could get mixed up as there is no precise corrispondence between one arabic word and one latin character, i.e. gh for غ could be interpreted as g+h ج + ه and so on...
So how can we solve this problem ? Luckily we can use the special charatcters which are present in Microsoft Word. The best transcription is, in my opinion, this one:
أ a
ب b
ت t
ث ṯ
ج ğ
ح ḥ
خ ḫ
د d
ذ ḏ
ر r
ز z
س s
ش š
ص ṣ
ض ḍ
ط ṭ
ظ ẓ
ع ʿ
غ ģ
ف f
ق q
ك k
ل l
م m
ن n
ه h
و w
ي y
ء ‘
For the long vowels أ=ā و=ū ي=ī
Greetings!

We use the letters dh for ض.
And don't use *dd* at all.
