Chinese (Mandarin) Writing

Obviously Chinese characters are very different from English letters. So does it take you a longer time to write in Chinese than English, or roughly the same, or is writing in English faster?

You are right. It's generally faster to write an English word, comparing to a Chinese characater, by one or two seconds, because Chinese characters have more 'strokes' in most cases (exception? Yes! Take 丁, 二, 口, for example). But some write Chinese way faster than average (like me) and make it perfectly cursive--which can be another obstacle to overcome (i.e. to be able to recognise the handwirting from person to person) after differentiating tones for learners, I think.

When it comes to a longer sentence or an essay, things can change reverely. That said, writing Chinese becomes faster than English, becasue Chinese is a concise (and thus vague sometimes) language. It takes way fewer Chinese characters to carry same amount of information which English words do.

Regarding typing (contemporary form of writing nowadays), it takes more time to type Chinese because in Chinese there are so many homophones that you have to choose the right character(s) from the pop-up list at times (not the case of Cangjie input, here I talk about Zhuyin input and Pinyin input which most Chinese speakers do). Then, typing English is way faster but stands a good chance to make typos.

我感觉学习中文书写对非母语人士来说还是挺难的,但是常用词还是比较少,写多了就好了

My chinese teacher says that it is about the same in terms of swiftness of handwriting. I would think, though, that writing on the computer is much harder, because sometimes you have to use your mouse or keyboard to select the correct character that matches the pinyin.

We learn the writing of the characters starting from primary school(nowadays I think parents start to teach kids much earlier). In the first three years, students are required to learn about 2000 characters. It does take a shorter time to learn how to write English from what I know, and especially because that the words are mostly spelt according to the pronunciation, which makes it easier, whereas in Chinese quite a lot of characters are evolved from drawings and are not directly related to how they are pronounced.
