Assuming what you say is correct, of what benefit is it for a person to prosper and live as long as possible? Whether he lives for 1 year or 100, or lives in abject poverty or in prosperity, his portion in life will come to an end, and all the pains and pleasures of this world will be forgotten in an eternal nothingness. If we humans kill each other, it’s no big deal, because it has no lasting effect on the consciousness of the killer, the killed, or anyone else, since they will all eventually die, and all will be forgotten. If there is no afterlife (and I don’t pretend to know if there is or isn’t), then the present life seems pretty pointless.

If you want my 2 cents, I don't think <em>all</em> people need to believe in a religion, but there are a lot of reasons people do. Believing in a God gives people hope to deal with their lives and what happens after their death, it comforts them when loved ones die, it provides answers for some of the mysteries we see everyday and not so often, it gives them rules to live by and exist peacefully with neighbors, it provides a sense of group membership and belonging, it provides answers or reasons for bad things that happen, etc...

But myself, I haven't seen any conclusive evidence that convinces me that one God exists over another, or that any God exists at all. Also, on the flip side, I haven't seen any evidence completely <em>disproving</em> a God, although I do think it highly unlikely that a God exists. Disclaimer: I'm not open to debating these facts on this disussion since it's not relevant to the discussion topic, I'm merely stating my opinion.
