Paraphrasing

What is paraphrasing?

Paraphrasing is used when we want to change a sentence that we have read or heard without changing the meaning. This can be used in speaking when we can’t remember exactly what was said or what we have read but we want to pass on the same information or when we are writing and we want to repeat a sentence without copying the exact words because of the illegalities of copying.

Use a synonym - when using a synonym make sure that it means exactly the same as the word you are changing, some synonyms have slightly different meanings.

For example: The police stopped the man because he was driving too fast.

The man was speeding and so the police stopped him.

Use an anonym - Use an opposite negative

For example: The bags were very heavy.

The bags weren’t very light.

Phrasal verb - use a phrasal verb in place of the main verb.

For example: It’s better to wear your coat when you go out, it’s quite cold this evening.

It’s quite cold this evening, it’s better to put your coat on when you go out.

General verb - replace a word or noun with a verb

For example: There was a burglary at the house next door yesterday.

The house next door was burgled yesterday.

Where possible you can also change the structure of a sentence.
