You do not have to say the year you were born, but you should say some event global or very important in your country, or in the whole world.

I know my birth was propably the most important event that happened in that year :)
I was born in the year the Soviet Union was dissolved :P (and more precisely on the day the Belavezha accords [which declared its dissolution] were signed).
On the day of my birth Sergeant Shoichi Yokoi was discovered on Guam by two hunters, after having been hiding in the jungle for 27 years. His remark "It is with much embarrassment, but I have returned" seems to have become a popular saying in Japan :) Poor thing. He married and settled down in Aichi Prefecture. One thing we have in common is that we are both advocate of austere living! ;)
