Hi, I was reading paper and I met a structure like "that of/and that of" I don't know. What does it mean? Could you someone who really knows this explain it,please? Thank you.
Some examples;
"As mentioned before, vehicle K calculates the position to vehicle L by differencing its absolute position and that of vehicle L."
or
"This analysis is independent of the proposed method and investigates the potential
achievable performance adopting the approach and that of GPS."
or
"GPS-based position estimate is the difference of the DGPS-based position of the target vehicle and that of its neighbor"
It could be just a simple example of a pronoun: "that" just replaces some noun or noun phrase.
Therefore, in the examples you have given -
1) "that" = "absolute position": "...differencing its absolute position and the absolute position of vehicle L"
2) "that" = "the potential achievable performance": "... investigates the potential achievable performance adopting the approach and the potential achievable performance of GPS"
3) "that" = "the DGPS-based position": "... is the difference of the DGPS-based position of the target vehicle and the DGPS-based position of its neighbor"
"That of" is very similair to the Turkish "ki", but is almost only used (in writing). It roughly means that (characterisitic or thing which we just mentioned) belonging to Noun 2.
In the sentence, "As mentioned before, vehicle K calculates the position to vehicle L by differencing its absolute position and that of vehicle L.""
"that of vehicle L" really means "the absolute position of vehicle L". As "the absolute position" was already mentioned (and it's rather long to write), "that of" is used to tell the reader that they are mentioning the same thing, but belonging to the second object.
