I recently bought an external hard drive (I call it my outboard motor). When I am teaching on skype there is a buzzing noise caused by this 'thing'. What can I do to prevent/stop this background noise. I don't think my students can hear it but I am very aware of it. There must be an IT guy amongst you who can help.

Leigh: is it possible for you to disconnect the drive or unpower it just while you're skyping? (and then reconnect when you're finished?).
try putting it on something soft so it doest vibratethe desk making more noise. dont cover it because it will get hot.
Actually I have thought how about putting it in a sound-proof box.
I agree. Short of turning it off, moving it farther away, or buying a quieter one, there's not much you can do. One other thing to consider, are you using files on the external drive while you're teaching? If you're accessing files on the drive it will make more noise.
Typically, the answer would be "yes". However, if the files are integral to a piece of software that was loaded on 'the thing', then "no".
For instance, if you have some Word documents stored on 'the thing' but Microsoft Word itself is installed on your C: drive, then "yes", you should be able to copy those document files from 'the thing' to your C: drive and continue using them with 'the thing' turned off. However, if Word itself is installed on 'the thing', then "no", you would need to leave 'the thing' on because even if you copied the documents over to C:, it would still need to access the Word progam on 'the thing' to work.
Does that make sense?
