The digital gap After the online commemoration of the 1989 Tiananmen Square by activists from the United States and China in Zoom (the video-chat app), the government of China didn't standstill. The platform blocked the account of one of the Chinese activist who hosted a session on Zoom. After asking why they took that decision, the company responded with a worrisome statement. This text will talk about how states can use digital platforms as a tool for controlling their people. The tech company posted an article where they explained that the Chinese government asked them to stop the sessions of the commemoration and block the hosting accounts. The company did that, specifically in three of the four meetings that they wanted to perform. They also wrote that because many Chinese people were going to attend the event, they had to follow the rules of the government. This situation puts the debate about the uses of tech companies by states. Platforms like zoom can become a new tool for instigation by China. In the end, these declarations highlight the power of the states over their citizens, especially on the internet. Also, it shows the big digital gap that China is creating on the internet in comparison with the rest of the world.
