Fishing without a Rod Have you ever gone fishing without a rod? To reply to this question, I bet you will think of a net. When this idea comes to me, I don't think of a net. Instead, there's a little narrow-necked bottle glittering in my mind. When I was young, I lived in a small village, where a small river flowed by still. It was my paradise, so was to my fellows. As a child, I didn't have pocket money to buy a rod and a few fishhooks. But we, a crowd of about ten-year-old kids never bothered a rod to catch fish. No one could remember who was the first invented this great way to fish just as we didn't know who ever developed and taught us those interesting games we played every day. It didn't take any time to learn how to fish with a bottle. First, you just needed to get a discarded or unused plastic or glass bottle with a narrow neck. It was easy to find one in your kitchen. A sauce container or a sugar jar was good enough as long as it was transparent. Remove all labels and clean it up to make sure it smelt nothing so that fish wouldn't notice it was a trap. How big it was depended on how big the fish you expected to catch were. To a kid, he paid no attention to what kind and size of the fish he could get, the only thing he cared about was to play with those fellows together, laughing and splashing by the river. We also never took care of how to get and which kind of lures we would use. Digging worms underground, seizing green larvae on leaves, searching for grasshoppers in grass or picking a piece of steamed bread from the kitchen was an available and joyful way for our kids. To your surprise, a good fishing spot was not a place where fish gathered, the shade of trees or under a stone bridge was a better choice for us. Fish always found food even they were in a child's trap, a simple bottle. Wading into the water, not far from the bank, lay the bottle down on the riverbed and the bottle mouth toward the bank, then put food inside, near the neck of the bottle. This way it was attractive enough for an inexperienced and greedy fish. At last you only need to sit down still, waiting fish to go in. Being patient was always necessary.
