What's the difference between "in the street" and "on the street"?
Are these correct:
There are some shops on that street.
There are some shops in that street.

In American English, the phrase "in the street" refers to the street itself; that is, the road upon which automobiles actually travel.  If someone or something is "in" the street, he or it might be hit by a car.

Also in American English, "on the street" usually means along the sides of the street.  I am referring to such things as the sidewalks and the buildings on both sides of the street.  The sidewalks and buildings are "on" the street.  

In the US, we would say, "There are some shops <em>on</em> that street."  I don't know which preposition the British or other English speakers would use in that case.  Maybe someone else will comment.

One should almost never use in the street.....that would mean physically in the middle ..like trash papers or garbage in the street....There are some shops on that street correct!

Please don't run in the street - you might get hit by a car!
