Growing up in a Chinese Mexican Family I've been slightly lying, my great grandfather emigrated from Guangdong to Mexico. He married a Chinese Mexican woman and had my grandfather, but it's always easier to just say my grandfather was the one who emigrated. Anyway, it's very interesting to note the way my grandfather's culture was integrated into the Mexican culture. Although he did not teach his children Cantonese, he passed on a little bit of tradition. We make fried rice and call it Cho Fan. Some of my baby cousins and I were dressed in traditional clothes for their baby pictures. Two of my cousins born in Mexico are named Sem Li and Ying Lian. One of my great uncles speaks Cantonese and regularly visits Guangdong. My mother refers to my great grandfather as Chio Sam. Our last name is Chew, so I wonder why our surnames changed. Maybe it has to do with romanization in Mexico. Here's a picture of my grandfather, his siblings, my grandmother and my infant mother. Very interesting.
