To learn a language by watching movies and listening songs Hi, I'm studying to improve my English, especially in speaking. Sometimes it's very boring to spend a lot of hours studying grammar. The progress seems to be slow and little. To enjoy myself I have started learning songs and watching movies. I have learnt many new words and phrasal verbs in this way, but I don't know if it is useful for my aim or only a distraction. What do you think? It's seems to be useful to practice speaking when I am on my own. It's an alternative way to hear my voice and keep training myself on different accents.

Excellently written entry! I have found that simply having a conversation with myself is a really good way to practice because I have to be bother people in the conversation. Perhaps you will find this useful. Best of luck!

Many people find listening comprehension to be a problem, so your approach is valuable; it is not easy to understand spoken English all the time! I do the same with Italian films, even if I only understand half of the dialogue :(

To learn a language by watching movies and listening to songs

Hi, I'm studying to improve my English, especially in speaking. Sometimes it's very boring to spend a lot of hours studying grammar. Progress seems to be slow and scant. To enjoy myself I have started learning songs and watching movies. I have learnt many new words and phrasal verbs in this way, but I don't know if it is useful for furthering my aims, or only as a distraction. What do you think?
As a way of practising speaking when I am on my own, it seems to be useful. It's an alternative way of hearing my voice and improving my English accent.

Well written, well done Marco.

A couple of times a week, when I'm walking my dog, I pretend I'm speaking to someone on my cellphone (so that people don't think I'm totally crazy!) and I have complete conversations out loud with my imaginary Italian caller. I'm quite an imaginative person, so I treat it as a proper conversation, and I respond fully and properly in Italian to the imaginary questions or comments of the person on the other end of the line. I don't censor the conversation by restricting it to subjects or words that I already know, which forces me out of my comfort zone and encourages me to widen my vocabulary. I recommend it!

I've been "learning" Japanese by watching subtitled anime. You don't learn as much as speaking practice of course, but if you have fun too, it allows you to kill two birds with one stone (relax and learn at the same time). I'm a huge fan of watching movies and tv in other languages because it's a good way to slowly learn and reinforce your knowledge, as long as you're aware that you're learning much less than you would through a conversation =).

Hi, I have started to watch series without subtittles too and i think i am improving my listening and is the most useful for that. But i don't know if you can learn the whole language with that because you need grammar, practise speaking...
