je ne comprend pas cette phrase... Le chevalier ouvre le coffre. Il découvre un manteau brodé d'or. il offre le manteau à la reine. Il lui couvre tendrement les épaules. I cant figure out the subject and the object. And why 'les' is used but not' ses"??

The same way goes in English, where the useless repetition is even more obvious, if you say he covers her her shoulders, instead of he covers her the shoulders, or he covers her shoulders.

If you use "ses épaules" it's akward, as the sentence already says "il lui couvre"; with "ses", it's a pleonasm, saying twice the same idea, like "je descends en bas", "je sors dehors". It is a syntax error.

Il couvre tendrement les épaules de la reine avec le manteau qu'il lui a offert
lui > la reine
You can use also ses épaules but les is good also
