My Favorite Korean Movie: The Attorney (2013) "The sovereignty of Republic of Korea comes from its people, and all power comes from them. A nation is its people." Although I'm not very interested in Korean movies, there are some great movies that surprised me. "The Attorney (2013)" is one of such an awesome Korean movies, which drew over ten million audiences. (South Korea's gross population is about fifty millions.) This movie is a legal thriller faction based on a real incident that occurred in Busan, Korea in 1981 when Korea was under a military dictatorship that staged a coup. There is a lawyer, Song Woo-Seok. Many other lawyers look down on him because he didn't graduate from university. He is not interested in social problems. He thinks that the world is strong establishment's. He concentrates on making money and became a famous tax lawyer that earns the most money in Busan. Seven years ago, before he became a lawyer, he once ran away from a small restaurant without payment for his meal. He drops by the restaurant to pay his debt. And Choi Soon-Ae, the restaurant's master, generously forgives him and treats him as if he was her family. She has a son, Choi Jin-Woo, who is the apple of her eye. Choi Jin-Woo has had a common reading club to teach his friends literature. However, one day, the military dictatorship arrests him and takes him somewhere. He is forced to make a false confession by brutal torture as if he shared procommunistical books. Choi Soon-Ae begs Song Woo-Seok for help. Since he owed her, he decides to help her to even see her son. However, after he sees Choi Jin-Woo's severely tortured body, he decides to be his attorney, resenting the injustice. What's so great about this movie is the stellar performance of all the actors in the movie. Song Gang-Ho, who played the character of Song Woo-Seok, especially gave many people goose bumps and definitively proved himself to be one of the best Korean actors. In fact, the movie is politically controversial because the real figure of the character of Song Woo-Seok is the President Roh Mu-Hyun, who committed suicide six years. Although I don't personally like Roh Mu-Hyun, I think that we don't need to relate him to the movie. It makes us seriously think of democracy and justice. As a movie, it must be a monumental masterpiece of Korean movies.
