How to get the Chinese Caron or Inverted Circumflex on a Mac (3rd tone) Maybe it's because my Google skills are not as great as I think they are, but I really struggled to find an answer that worked to ensure that I typed the Chinese caron with ease - for example nǐ or hǎo instead of nî or hâo. And I do not want to have to resort to downloading another app or copying and pasting every time I want a caron to represent the third tone. Anyway, after many failed attempts with following instructions that just didn't work for me/my brain, I figured out that using the US extended keyboard (not the Brit keyboard) and then typing alt v + the vowel worked on my Mac. Hopefully, this helps someone out there who is not happy with simply using the existing circumflex option you get when you hold down the vowel keys to choose the accents. Well, it made me happy!

Unfortunately, I have updated my Mac OS to Sierra, and the US Extended Keyboard has been removed. Need to find a new trick but I am still trying to avoid copy and paste! Sigh.

Xìexie Mr Zhang, I will check it out too for use on my phone or tablet but for now the method above works on my Mac so I am happy. Do you use that site/tool just on your PC/laptop or do you use it on a phone or tablet as well? If so, does it work on all devices?

Hi Em, I've given up trying to use keyboard shortcuts to type Pinyin accent marks. Instead, I now use this site/tool: http://web.csulb.edu/~txie/Itool/type_pinyin_with_tones.htm (all directions are written on the page).
