Difficult thing...

Hi=D
I'm not good at remembering words, but I make an effort to learn many words.
It doesn't go well much of the time. :(
Do you have any idea to help me learning words?
I watch dramas such as "FRIENDS" to study English.
I want to speak English like a natives someday:)

My answer:

There are two basic approaches to memorizing words: unaided and aided.

*Unaided*. Every time you encounter the word, you look it up and remind yourself. Eventually, after lots of time and effort, your brain builds the neural pathways so you can recognize the word when you see/hear it. It's anyone's guess whether you'll ever be able to easily recall the word for use in your own speech/writing. This is a relatively inefficient and ineffective method, but it's probably the default one.

*Aided*. When you encounter the word for the first time, you actively build visual imagery in your imagination. That imagery associates the word with its meaning, its sound, and with the sounds of words you already know (usually in your native language). You commit this imagery and audio to memory; the more bizarre and emotionally affecting the mnemonic, the easier it'll be to remember. Revise this mnemonic after 10mins, 30mins, 60mins, 1 day, 2 days, a week, and so on. Now when you encounter the word you try to access the mnemonic you've invented for it. If you forget, then try again to commit it to memory. After a few tries, it should sink in. Keep writing and speaking, comparing the words you use to words in the content you're reading and trying to make sure you're using as many words as you can. Your passive vocabulary will always be bigger than your active vocabulary, but generating language (speaking/writing) rather than always consuming it (listening/reading) will develop your active vocab.

If you keep studying English, I'm sure you can be good at it. What about reading English books? You like watching American dramas, right? What about watching them with English subtitles?
