Catrines

The catrines are characters who are related with Dia de Muertos, however they have little or nothing to do the origin of this celebration.
The catrines as characters appeared in the middle of the XIX century. People used to use this word to name those who pretended a life style that did not correpond to their incomes. Another meaning of this word was and currently is used to name those who wear their best clothes: I am dressing as a catrin! She was dressed as a catrina! These two sentences show this meaning.
In the early XX century José Guadalupe Posada popularized the catrina representing it as a skeleton with best clothes and a big hat to make fun of people who preferred to skimp on food to be able to buy fine clothes. In the colloquial language it would be said that they preferred to die of hunger in order to pretend a life style.
Over the years the Posada's catrina became part of the celebration of the Day of the Dead, and there will always be a catrina on the altar and women and men will dress up as catrines these days.
The catrina make up is a white face with dark eyes, nose and cheeks imitating a skull. The catrina generally wears a long dress with a bisg hat or a crown of flowers, or the clothes can be the best clothes of the person who is dressing up as a catrina. In this case, the image shows a catrina in the traditional costume of Zinacantán, Chiapas, one of the most beautiful costumes of my country.
