I live in a mountainous area, and I would strongly advise foreigners not to hike alone. There are many trails in our mountains, but when the fog rolls in, it is very easy to get lost. On top of that, if someone breaks a leg or suffers another serious injury, who will help them? Who will call the emergency services or hike back to a tourist area to ask for help? It is heartbreaking to hear news about people who spend days lost in the mountains. It is even more heartbreaking to imagine them wandering around hungry, cold, and desperately trying to find help.
