커뮤니티 튜터The One Thing Nobody Tells You About Speaking English Under Pressure
You've studied. You've practiced. You know the vocabulary. But the moment someone puts you on the spot in a job interview, a big presentation, or an important phone call, your mind goes blank. Your heart races. The words disappear.
Sound familiar?
Here's what nobody tells you: that feeling has nothing to do with your English level. It happens to native speakers too. I've watched confident executives freeze in boardrooms. I've seen brilliant professionals stumble through interviews they were completely qualified for. The problem isn't vocabulary. The problem is pressure.
So here is the single most powerful technique I teach my students and it works every time.
Pause on purpose.
Most non-native speakers panic when they need a moment to think, because silence feels like failure. So they rush, they stumble, they lose their train of thought. But a deliberate, confident pause actually does the opposite of what you fear. It makes you sound thoughtful. It makes you sound in control. Native speakers do it constantly and we just don't notice because it looks intentional.
Next time you feel that panic rising, try this. Take a breath, say "that's a great question" or "let me think about that for a moment" and give yourself three full seconds. Three seconds feels like forever inside your head. To everyone else it looks like confidence.
My question for the community: What is the moment you find most difficult when speaking English under pressure? An interview? A meeting? A phone call? Tell me below and I read every reply.
