Question:
In some countries, secondary schools aim to provide a general education across a range of subjects. In others, children focus on a narrow range of subjects related to a particular career. Which do you think is appropriate in today’s world.
Answer:
Under the wave of globalization, today’s world is becoming increasingly interconnected and integrated in a Western-oriented manner. However, not all countries unconditionally support the globalization. Each nation responds to globalization based on its own economic development, culture, and other realities. In this answer, I will discuss which type of secondary education is most appropriate from the perspectives of a country’s economic development and strategic needs.
For developing countries heavily dependent on foreign direct investment, for example the overseas production of iPhones, it might be more effective for their economic development to invest their limited educational resources in specialized education to train manpower for specific jobs. If they were to educate their youth to perform a wide variety of jobs, there might not be high-quality jobs available to match this education, leading to a societal waste of human resources.
On the other hand, developed countries with a robust industrial structure have a variety of job demands. It would be efficient for them to focus on a general education that prepares students for diverse roles. Moreover, they can utilize the cheaper labor in developing countries that are trained for specific tasks, so they don’t need to invest heavily in specialized education.
However, the aforementioned educational policies for developing and developed countries are based solely on immediate economic efficiency. A narrow educational focus in developing countries could strengthen their economic dependence on developed countries. Therefore, I believe that developing countries should reinvest the capital they earn and gradually expand general education, consistently str
