Gustavo, What a great goal! I always recommend that students start just like native speakers do: with children's books. It's easy to pressure ourselves into thinking that we need to read at a higher level because we're adult learners. However, starting with shorter books at a lower level helps to build both the habit and the confidence you'll need to read a novel. A series that is beautifully written and contains some great vocabulary is: The Berenstain Bears by Stan & Jan Berenstain. There is a great balance in these books between enough text to really learn from but not so much that you feel overwhelmed. Many of my students have really enjoyed learning from this series. For example, in the book "Learn About Strangers," one passage reads: "The next day dawned bright and friendly - to everybody but Sister. She had spent a restless night and when she looked out the window, everything seemed a little strange. The trees seemed to reach for her, an owl stared at her, and the crows glared." Whatever you find to read, if you make sure it's something you have a personal interest in or that contains information you really need, this will help you to read when you don't feel as motivated and you'll get the most out of the experience. Hi Gustavo, I agree with Daria—if you've already read Harry Potter or watched the movies in your native language, then reading the first book in English is a great place to start because you'll be familiar with the story. While dependent on your level of English, YA (Young Adult) genre novels often have easier vocabulary and simple storylines as well. If you find that reading novels is still too difficult for you, then using dual-language books or English language books specifically for beginners is a good step towards building vocabulary and improving your reading skill. Hi, Gustavo! From my personal experience, I could recommend to read the first part of Harry Potter, especially if you read it in your native language. Moreover, there are many short stories (by Roald Dahl, for instance). They are not too difficult and not so long to lose motivation to read further.
