You've probably heard it: it takes 21 days to form a new habit. Sounds neat. It's also not true.
This idea came from a plastic surgeon in the 1960s who noticed his patients took about 21 days to get used to their new appearance. No formal research, just casual observation. Somehow it became gospel.
Actual studies tell a different story. Research shows habits take anywhere from 18 to 254 days to form — with an average of 66 days.
And the habits being studied were simple ones, like having fruit instead of dessert or going for a 15-minute run before dinner.
The biggest factor? Consistency. Not motivation, not willpower — just showing up regularly.
Here's what this means for language learning: if you've been practising English regularly and then life gets in the way — don't stop completely.
Reduce, but don't quit.
Two lessons a week instead of four. Ten minutes of listening instead of thirty. The pattern stays alive.
The hardest part isn't starting. It's not stopping when things get uncomfortable.
