Hello, could someone explain me the following sentence in an easier way... The sentence is too long to understand.. "When, in the course of human events, it becomes necessary for one portion of the family of man to assume among the people of the earth a position different from that which they have hitherto occupied, but one to which the laws of nature and of nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes that impel them to such a course."

It seems the Jonathan and Randolph are correct here. The text 'is' about women's rights: it is based on/ adapted from the text from the Declaration of Independence, and dates from 1848...

This is the introductory sentence to the US Declaration of Independence. This document should be at least somewhat familiar to every US citizen. Basically, this first sentence says that the writers recognize that declaring independence (of the American colonies from England) is a big deal, and that is why they’ve written the Declaration of Independence. It has nothing to do with women’s rights.

The text in the original post is taken from the "Declaration of Sentiments" that was penned at the First Women's Rights Convention held in Seneca Falls, New York in 1848: https://www.womenshistory.org/sites/default/files/document/2019-08/Day%203_0.pdf https://www.loc.gov/exhibitions/women-fight-for-the-vote/about-this-exhibition/seneca-falls-and-building-a-movement-1776-1890/seneca-falls-and-the-start-of-annual-conventions/declaration-of-sentiments/ The first few words are directly lifted from the Declaration of Independence, but after that it diverges. To those of us who are more than "somewhat" familiar with the wording of the declaration, the difference is noticeable.
