"Gross" is more commonly used in oral English. For example, you see something disgusting on the floor you can say "gross," or if you think a dish is incredibly unappetizing you can also say that.

‘Gross’ has many meanings. In general it’s a type of amount or measure that hasn’t been corrected.
That dentist offices grosses $600k. (Verb - The total revenues of the business)
Report your gross income on line 20. (Adjective indicating that there will be deductions or corrections from this amount)
Truckers pay fees based on the gross weight of their trucks.
That crime isn’t a felony but it is a gross misdemeanor. (Adjective meaning ‘big’. It’s worse than a regular misdemeanor)
You can be fired for gross misconduct no matter how long you’ve been working. (Serious misconduct)
It’s a gross injustice. (Intensifying adjective. It’s very unjust.)

The most common use is indeed as a synonym for 'disgusting'. It's also used to mean SUM or TOTAL, but mostly in relation to government or business.
Gross National Product (GNP) or Gross Domestic Product (GDP) are common terms in economics.
