In English we wouldn’t really say we ‘ate for a long time’ but instead I would say we ‘ate a lot’ to indicate how much. If you were instead talking about eating for a long time it would probably refer to having several dishes at restaurant for ex a salad and then an appetizer and then an entree and then a dessert and that you were there for several hours etc. Also when referring to your mother you would include the word ‘my’. And I would normally say ‘my family’ for the meal as I assume you mean your immediate family, husband or parents, your children etc.
