Russian grammar Hi, In the sentence: У НЕГО В ГОЛОВЕ НЕ БЫЛО НИ ОДНОЙ МЫСЛИ There was not a single thought in his mind I am confused as to why the БЫЛО isn't БЫЛА in this instance, because the thing that isn't in his head is feminine, МЫСЛЬ. Please help!

МЫСЛЬ in this case isn't a subject, it's a direct object in an impersonal sentence.

in this sentence you used the verb with the meaning "not have". In Russian this meaning of this verm you can express in past only with the verb" не было" no matter what kind of word follows it and in future " не будет" у меня не было ручки(past) у меня не будет ручки(future) у меня не было гостей у меня не будет гостей у него не было машины у него не будет машины

I would say "There wasn't any thought in his head")) "There wasn't" is Past Simple and if it were "there is" it would be in Present Simple. In both cases wasn't "What"? (genitive) - thought)) It means не было. But if we say "The thought was or wasn't good" it will mean "была or не была хорошей". Thats all))))

Здесь Винительный падеж. Если бы был именительный, было бы "была". Пример: У меня была мысль. Подлежащее и сказуемое: Мысль была. Твой пример: У него в голове не было ни одной мысли. Тут нет подлежащего, только сказуемое: не было. (чего?) мысли - Винителный падеж. А в первом примере (что?) мысль - именительный падеж. Let me know if this is still not clear. I want you to be able to understand it.
