The pronunciation of the Russian word паспорт Can someone tell me the correct pronunciation of the Russian word паспорт? Is it Is it PASPORT as I found in www.forvo.com or it is PASPART as the O is unstressed and as I have read the pronunciation of O is A? Thanks in advance Elias The bad think is that in COLLOQUIAL RUSSIAN learning book says that the pronunciation of the word is: 1. Stressed as O 2. Unstressed & before the stress syllabus or in the begining of the word as A 3. In all unstressed ocasions as E. In some other books says O (stressed) & A (unstressed). What is your opinion?

This rule: 1. Stressed as O 2. Unstressed & before the stress syllabus or in the begining of the word as A 3. In all unstressed ocasions as E. most of all resembles the truth. But instead of "E" (point 3) I'd suggest you pronounce the sound like [ə], couse really it sounds neither as A nor as E. So, пАспорт = ['pas pərt] пОрох = ['pɒ rəh] порОг = [pʌ 'rɒk] молокО = [mə lʌ 'kɒ]. Approximately this way.

Паспорт О isn't stressed so it's pronounced as sound between о and a. There is a lot of dialects in Russia so somewhere people also pronounce it as а or as о.

In Russian you always get what you see, i.e. read letters as they are and you never will be wrong. There are much more important things in learning language except these nuances about stressed or unstressed vowels. Good pronunciation may come only from practice, not from books and rules.

I agree with Lara. It sounds between o and a. But also it depends on region. I believe that for example in Vologda it may sound like paspOrt. By the way, google translator says that word correctly. Я хотел сказать: Я согласен с Ларой. Звучит как что-то между о и а. Но так же звучание зависит от региона. Я уверен что на пример в Вологде слово может звучать как паспОрт. Между прочим, google- переводчик говорит это слово правильно
