"Goodbye, Mr. Chips" is a novel by James Hilton, published in 1934
In the story Mr. Chipping is shy, retiring teacher at a English boarding school, unable to connect to his students. He marries a woman who inspires him to in turn inspire his students.
The story starts at the end of the Victorian era (about 1901) and continues to Hitler's rise to power.
It is very sentimental and implied a wish for the by-gone Victorian era. It was made into a film in 1939.
