Can Spanish speakers and Italian speakers understand each other? I heard that they both belong to Latin language and are very similar to each other. So can a Spanish speaker(who has never learned Italian) understand what is an Italian speaker talking about? Or the opposite, which is, can an Italian speaker understand a Spanish Speaker? Thanks!

The language spoken in Alghero ( Sardinia North) is "Catalan", but it is a variant of the ancient Spanish language, but Sardinia's official language ( not a dialect) is the Sardo Logudorese and many dialectal variants of the Sardinian language. The Sardinian is similar to Spanish, but in certain expressions recalls the Portuguese. Spanish speakers understand Italian speakers if they speak slowly and vice versa, although in both languages there are many similar words with different meanings.

Yes Spanish is more undestandable for us Italians. Yes if we are talking about simple things yes a Spanish person can understand.Surely not all the words. Portuguese is a little bit difficult and also Romanesc. In Sardina their dialect is equal to Catalan. :) Romances languages. http://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E7%BD%97%E6%9B%BC%E8%AF%AD%E6%97%8F
