COMMODITY is
1) a raw material or primary agricultural product that can be bought and sold, such as copper or coffee:
e.g. Water is a precious commodity.
The government increased prices on several basic commodities like bread and meat.
2) a useful or valuable thing:
e.g. Time is valuable commodity to us all.
Labour is bought and sold like any other commodity.
MERCHANDISE (use it with a singular verb)
1) the commodities or goods that are bought and sold in business; commercial wares.
General Merchandise is widely considered to be nonfood items. This may include cleaners, personal hygiene products, paper goods, seasonal items such as cards and decor, and auto/electrical items.
NB: MERCHANDISE used as a noun is very rare.
e.g. You would sell the merchandise at a cost you would determine.
In addition, there is a shop to buy merchandise.
Puzzle bus - offers a daily puzzle, books, software, and related merchandise.
