I wouldn't take it personally... What does that mean in this context? SCRIPT SUSAN: Oh. (laughs) MIKE: Bongo! I don’t know why he barks at you, Susan. EDIE: Oh, I wouldn’t take it personally. Dogs are very sensitive. (goes to Bongo, patting him, rubbing him, looking at SUSAN innocently) What’s up, Bongo, huh? You never know what freaks them out, huh? QUESTION Ok. Here are questions: 1. What does "I wouldn't take it personally" imply in this context? According to this context, rubbing, carassing, giving the dog some affectionate words mean "I wouldn't take it personally?" I don't understand probably because I've never raised a dog. T.T 2. You never know what freaks them out, huh? -> I think what freaks them out should be changed to "what freaks you out." Isn't Edie mentioning the single dog? Why does she mention "them"? Thank you so much for your help.

mjcmjc4321, 1) What does "I wouldn't take it personally" imply in this context? This comment is for Susan. I wouldn't take it personally (If I were you, Susan.) The dog is barking at Susan. Edie advises Susan not to take it personally, that is, not to think that the dog is barking at Susan because of her character or personality. 2) "Them" refers to human beings. Edie is talking to Bongo. She is looking at the world through the eyes of the dog. --You never know what freaks human beings out, huh Bongo?

1) Mike is saying to Edie that she should not be offended because the dog is barking at her. The dog barks at everyone. This comment has nothing to do with petting the dog. It is directed to Edie and her feelings. 2) Edie is talking about why dogs bark in general. "Them" is referring to all dogs, not just his dog.

This is a common phrase in american english. It means "don't be offended" or to not let one's feelings be hurt.
