Speak to a mass, whereas, talk to a person.

The two verbs "speak" and "talk" overlap a lot. "TO SPEAK" indicates to me a more formal communication situation or usage, and "TO TALK" is more informal, closer to "to chat."
YOUR EXAMPLES (They could mean the same thing or be interpreted strictly.)
1. "They are speaking together." (formal or colder situation) (By "together," you can interpret that as meaning "to each other" or "separately to an audience at the same place.")
2. "They are talking together." (informal chitchat)
Students are often required to take SPEECH communication classes, where they learn to how to construct and deliver different types of SPEECHES. If I tell you that I am going TO SPEAK on a topic, then there is probably some preparation involved and the social situation is more than just having a regular conversation.
When a student comes to the front of the class to make a SPEECH, he can say, "I'm going TO SPEAK about tree squirrels" or "I'm going TO TALK about tree squirrels." Using either verb is okay for this type of situation. Another example (with noun forms): "I'm going to give a SPEECH/a TALK on tree squirrels."

I think 'talking' sounds more like a conversation
And 'speaking' just sounds like the action speaking
They mean the same thing but i think talking just sounds more like something you would use for a actual conversation :)
