As far as I know, 打 means "hit", and only means "play" when you play something that requires hitting. Play tennis, play the piano, play rugby: all of these should be obvious.

sometimes 玩儿& 打 are the same.eg:in Chinese 'paly games" u can say打游戏OR玩游戏 they r both ok.but sometimes their meanings r quite different~

dont say 玩儿 just say 玩, 玩儿 is what I would call an acrolect, most used in Beijing area.
