Using や~や~など to list items In my revision book there's a structure used to list some items: eg: 僕の部屋に机やいすやテレビなどがあります。 But further down there's a sentence that uses the same construct but without など on the end. It doesn't explain why either and I'm wondering if there's any difference or not. 1)机の上に本やノートがあります。 2)机の上に本やノートなどがあります。

などmeans "so on" or "etc." Therefore, the second sentence indicates that there are more than a book and a notebook on the desk. 1)机の上に本やノートがあります。 There are a book and a notebook on the desk. 2)机の上に本やノートなどがあります。 There are a book, a notebook and other items on the desk. Hope this helps.

From what I've study, the など part is optional. You can add it if you want to. I've never heard it used while speaking though. I've only encountered it in my textbook grammar section.
