Please check my understanding of the difference between 'mag' and 'gern' I want to check I understand the difference between these 2 words correctly. From what I have read. Gern is an adverb and and when used alone goes with verbs. For example Ich höre gern Musik .( I like (listening to) music) This sentence is correct, yes? Making 'Ich gern Musik' incorrect, yes? Can I also say 'Ich höre Musik gern'? Mag is a verb and when used alone goes with nouns only. For example Ich mag Musik ( I like music) Ich mag Cola ( I like coke) 'Mag' can become a helper verb and be used alongside a main verb, meaning 'mag' and 'gern' can be used together, like this. Ich mag Musik hörnen. and Ich mag Cola trinken. Is this all right? Do I understand correctly?Forget the bit that says 'mag' and 'gern' can be used together It's late here. I'm not thinking straight!,

Hi, You would never say Ich mag Cola trinken. You would say ich möchte etwas trinken. This implies that you would like something to drink. Not that you like to drink something. I'm talking from the context of ordering a drink. To make things even more complicated, it is a bit more informal/"cool" to say ich hätte gern ein Bier. rather than ich möchte ein Bier trinken. But yes, mag comes from the verb mogen, of which möchten is the subjunctive II. gern implies that you like to do something gladly and you have used it in the right context.

Yes "gern" is an adverb. "Ich gern Musik" is not a correct because there is no verb. I think you can also say, Ich höre Musik gern. Mag (infinitive form "mögen - to like") is a verb which requires an object (noun). Mögen as helping verb means "may" which you will learn later (for example may God help you). But here it is used in the sense of "I like" When you want to say, I like doing something. This doing something is can take place of noun. Ich mag "Musik hören". Ich mag "Scach spielen", Ich mag "Deutsch lernen" etc. In all these examples "mag" is not used as helping verb, rather as a simple verb.

"Ich höre Musik gern" is also correct. "gern" always implies pleasure (I listen to music with pleasure). The verb "mögen" is used with an accusative (direct object) e.g."Ich mag dich", "Ich mag den Regen".
