Tenter me semble plus élégant, donc essayer est plus habituel pour moi. Par exemple, si je parlais avec un professionel je dirais "J'ai tenté de vous rejondre vendredi dernier" (I tried to reach you last Friday), mais entre amis, je dirais simplement "j'ai essayé de t'appeler vendredi".
