I love this song and used to write for a music magazine, explaining song lyrics! What Beth is saying here is that she and the person she's singing to have two options how they can proceed: play it safe: don't do anything 'bad', don't get in trouble (follow the rules!) play it cool: do whatever they want, maybe get in trouble (make your own rules) Does that help?
