spelling question: why does the last l in unparalleled is not doubled? The 'l' after a vowel should be doubled when adding the suffix -ed as 'labelled', 'controlled' , 'parcelled' and 'fulfilled'; however, it seems it's not case in 'paralleled'. I know American English is more flexible than British English, and hence traveling/traveler is acceptable in AE, but how could unparallelled is not accepted in neither of them? I think it is the accurate spelling based on spelling rules.

http://www.future-perfect.co.uk/grammar-tip/is-it-unparallelled-or-unparalleled/ ... the company suggested as a reference has it wrong I believe. The Oxford English Dictionary gives only the single L version. I will phone the company in the morning and ask them why they think LL is acceptable. They are based in my home town down on the south coast.

The general rule is to double... but it is only a GENERAL rule. Paralleled is an exception, possibly because you end up with so many Ls if you double! In the USA a chap named Webster encouraged the use of the single L as the USA wanted to make a political statement and assert some independence from Britain. Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, etc made no such attempt to change the spelling therefore the LL construction is more common in those countries. However, American influences are strong so the single L is becoming more common, especially in Canada. As to paralleled... paralleled is one L too many! And for the start of the Americans changing their ENGLISH.. try this link for an amusing little read. http://theweek.com/article/index/253077/26-of-noah-websters-spelling-changes-that-didnt-catch-on

Doubling consonants in English is a very inconsistent rule. There is no real reason or rhyme for it, you have to roll with the punches and keep certain exceptions to the 'rule' in mind when writing.

Hi mojave, It's strange, as my local dictionary accept traveling but doesn't accept unparalleled; Besides, the last 'e' in parallel is pronounced , so the 'l' should be doubled. It's really strange why unparalleled is spelt this way
