It's not English, but Hindi, and stands for "chick" (as in little chicken). I've heard it referred to as endearing when used in reference to girls, although there are others that only know of a derogatory meaning when used in regards to people (both male and female). (This is from the internet, I, as of yet, do not speak Hindi) :)
