I feel confused about the meaning of the sentence.
"He bent half double."
What does "half double" mean?

It means he bent over at the waist, at least 90 degrees.
Imagine someone getting hit in the stomach. When they bend over in pain, they would be bent "half double".
(It their head was at their feet, I suppose this would be the FULL double!)
