HYEOKMIN KWON
I have a question for native English speakers~! I have some difficulties in understanding of one part of the sentence. "Cooley and other researchers suggested a close connection between a person's own understanding of their identity and other people's understanding of it." 'a person's own understanding of their identity' this part confuses me. I think 'a person's' has to be changed as 'people's' or 'their identity' has to be changed as 'one's identity' because 'a person's' means 'just one person'. It if hard for me to explain it. I hope you would be able to get my points. Can you help me?

Your quote uses correct English. 'A person' means 'any person'. Substitute that in and it will make more sense.

I think it should be changed to "one's identity". The word "their" is VERY commonly mis-used in the english language, so it is somewhat of a slang.
