Der Baum ist groß, aber ich habe eine Leiter. Der Baum ist nicht groß, sondern klein. Aber and sondern can be used to mark a addition/difference, but (=aber) is used when giving additional information: Ich bin dick, aber ich bin jetzt auf Diät. (addition) You could also use "und" here Ich bin dick, und ich bin jetzt auf Diät. But using "aber" makes it clear that there is some kind of solution. If I'd use the first sentence with "und": Der Baum ist groß, und ich habe eine Leiter. It just tells us that there is a big tree and that you have a ledder. By using "aber" you'll implicate somehow a solution to the fact that the tree is big. "Sondern" is in contrast used when giving additional information to emphazise the difference that has been negated before. Ich bin !nicht! dick, sondern habe schwere Knochen. But(=aber) that's not all, bacause there is an exception. If you use the word "kaum" in the first sentenc you can also use "sondern" to emphazise the difference Er hat kaum gelacht, sondern meistens den Kopf geschüttelt.
