Or, one can subscribe to Philosophical Dualism, and follow the idea that a Mind/Body combination seems to have the best explanation for everything in human experience. The Classical Dualist position, which is generally the philosophy endorsed by most philosophers historically, and has had strong arguments in the form of several Proofs by Logic as its basis for claiming the greater "explanatory power". The Ontological Naturalist Philosophy, as a Monism by the has no logical proofs for anything to substantiate it. When someone tries to "explain" everything in strictly Monist terms, which is to say that Matter, Energy, Space and Time can "explain" everything mankind thinks and feels, obvious difficulties develop. So many Transcendental Conceptions that people all over the world adhere to, such as Good & Evil and personal experiences, combined with basic beliefs we all hold to such as the idea that each person is a uniquely individual SELF, are deeply embedded in all of the world's cultures. On the basis of a disciplined Science however, no SELF has ever been discovered in the physical anatomy of Homo Sapiens Sapiens. Therefore, the idea that Brain enables explanations for all of human experience, on the basis of Matter, Energy, Space and Time, simply fails. Abstractions do exist, and Mind seems to be the best explanation. Skeptics object to this. Mind, as part of the Dualist Worldview, is, owing to its immaterial and non-physical identity, a reference also to Transcendental Conceptions such as Soul, Spirit, and God.

(continued) Citing some scientific data, authors would presume to be explaining the operations of the Mind to readers. It usually took less than half of a first page or any book for the author to begin substituting Brain for the term MInd. What I was noticing then, can now be understood to be the common logical error designated the Fallacy of Equivocation. That occurs when someone begins substituting terminology with a different meaning for a term. In plain English, the brute fact is, that Mind is not "Brain". It is also an undisciplined Science which continues to employ the designation Mind when it is actually researching Brain. It is an error in logic and an undisciplined Science when something termed "Mental Events" is discussed in regard to researches into Brain. As teacher "Peachey" indicates so plainly; "A brain is a physical thing." Mind is non-physical. Also, modern Science abandoned the attempt to have a strict "Empiricism" or absolute Emprical explanation for "everything" when it was compelled, in the 1930's, to come to terms with the weaknesses of Inductive Logic. So we are faced with a world which has divided understandings of reality. One can subscribe to the Monist Philosophy of Ontological Naturalism, which is usually endorsed by Atheists, who inform mankind that Human Beings are "Robot Vehicles" in a Universe of Random Events and Blind Forces in which there is neither Meaning, Goal or Purpose. This is what obtains from claims that there is no Mind, and Brain is sufficient to explain all things "as shown by science".

Tera: The reason is very deep. There is in Philosophy a profound difficulty termed "The Mind/Body Problem" (MBP). Mankind cannot find Scientific Evidence showing that Mind exists. By exists, we consider that what is termed "real" is that which consists of Matter, Energy, Space, and Time. These are "natural phenomena". The failure of mankind to find actual evidences showing that Mind exists creates this problem and it has been ongoing as a Philosophical Argument for centuries. Moreover, the conflict is exacerbated by modern studies in Neuroscience. So, this creates a conflict between two current Worldviews. A worldview is a philosophy which presents itself as a system of thought which has the greatest "explanatory power". So currently in the world, the Classical Dualism (Mind/Body Dualism) has been adopted by both Religion and some Philosophers as the worldview with greater explanatory power. This worldview is challenged however, by a competing worldview termed "Ontological Naturalism". This is a negation of the Dualist worldview. It is called a Monism. A Monism is a philosophy which tells us that there exists only One Substance, commonly referred to as MATTER. By Matter however, we mean the general scientific definition which is inclusive of "Matter, Energy, Space and Time". That is regarded as the One Substance of which all things that are real, are made of.

A brain is a physical thing. Your mind is the thinking, reasoning and feeling part of your brain functions. If you say "use your mind", it sounds a little like telekinesis. :D
